...whatever order and influence [the other creatures] have imprinted within their nature, by that do they move, and they cannot at all change [it]; and by that God-ordained order they are good. But since man is endowed with free will, he is not directed [solely] by the impulse of nature; whatever his will desires, that he does, whether it be good or whether it be evil. Thus, just as by working evil he becomes evil, so also by working good he becomes good. It is certain that all other material creatures were created for man, but man was created for God. Therefore, man ought to endeavor and labor to be good, and thereby attain unto his end.
