...and if he be not virtuous, he shall live like a brute beast, and shall not attain unto his proper end. But whereas the principal, easiest path, and the most fitting means to become good and virtuous is civil education [and good breeding]; for thereby man doth subject himself unto the law, ordereth well his speech and deeds, and consequently becometh virtuous and happy. Therefore, even before moral books, it behooveth man in the time of his childhood to read and learn a book of civility [and manners], that in the time of his adulthood he may be virtuous. For just as a newly-planted tree, which, if through neglect it should grow crooked, may, while it is yet tender and soft, be straightened with a little care; but when it hath grown and hardened, it maketh void all the toil and labor of the gardener.
