...a remedy for ailments and diseases, and which through cultivation [or training] become useful unto man; whereas the wicked and uncouth man is utterly vile and useless, and hateful unto all; just as the good and polite [or civil] man is useful and beloved unto all. Wherefore, we have now desired to adapt this little book, which is entitled *Instruction in Politeness* [or *Civility*], for school children in the vernacular [or vulgar] style, that they may easily understand [it]; and that from their childhood they may learn the rules contained therein and form a habit [thereof], so that henceforth they may put [them] into practice throughout their entire lives, and thus, through good manners, day by day acquire perfect virtue, and be ever peaceful and happy, both in this world and in the life to come.
