[not to] keep [him] waiting in the courtyard or outside the chamber door, but promptly to invite [him] inside. 2. If the visitor is of higher rank than oneself, one must go forward to meet him, a greater or lesser distance according to the measure of his dignity; but if he is a person of equal rank, one must rise from one's place, or step down from the divan. 3. After receiving the visitor's greeting, [one must] promptly invite [him] to a place of honor; and after he is seated, [the host] himself should also sit near [him], and with sweet words show pleasure at his coming; and until the end [of the visit], [one must] give no impression whatsoever of being weary on account of his prolonged stay. 4. When the visitor desires to depart, one should show a desire [for him] to stay longer; and at the time of departure, give thanks for his coming, and accompany him as far as the chamber door, or the top of the stairs; and if he is a man of princely rank, go out into the street with him, and wait until he has departed thence.
