It is by no means becoming for anyone to obstinately insist upon his own opinion and say, “The manner I have proposed is most fitting, [and] it ought to be done thus,” as though he wishes to force his own view upon all. Rather, he ought to say, “Such a thought occurred to my mind; speak you also whatever seemeth proper unto you, and by the common consent of all, let that manner be chosen which is suited to the present time and profitable to the public.” 5. If anyone should bring forward an opinion that is impossible, unseasonable, or harmful, one ought not—in order to refute that speech—to demean the speaker and grieve his heart with biting words. Rather, by setting forth the reason with mildness, [one should] make him understand that it is not an acceptable opinion, [so as to] win his heart and do no harm to brotherly love. For it is permitted in an assembly that every man may speak his opinion boldly. 6.
