[If] anything should occur, we ought not to leave our main discourse half-finished and begin that digression; rather, without intermixing superfluous matters, we must pursue the words we first began until their conclusion, so that the mind of the listeners may not be burdened nor grow weary. 4. When someone is speaking in a company, the others ought to sit in silence and listen, and not interrupt his speech until he hath finished. 5. It also behooveth the speaker, as soon as he hath concluded his discourse, to fall silent and afford another the opportunity to speak. Wherefore, it is an uncivil thing which some babblers do, who, scarcely having finished one topic, immediately begin another; and if they find nothing to say, they repeat the very same things they spoke before. 6. The speaker ought to be circumspect and observe those seated [about him], whether they indeed lend a willing ear to what he saith; and if he perceiveth weariness...
