2. We ought always to be in prayer for them, that they may exercise their rule with long life and prosperity; for they are ever in disquiet so that we may remain in rest and peace; they cast their own persons into danger that they may protect us from enemies; they show no partiality whatsoever, [but] punish the doers of injustice, so that we may suffer neither deprivation nor distress. Wherefore the Apostle saith: “I exhort [therefore], that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; especially for kings, and [for] all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” [I Tim. 2:1–2]. 4. We ought to acknowledge the benefactions and favors of the king and of his rulers, and the grace and mercies [bestowed] upon us, and to serve them with fidelity and sincerity of heart; and to fulfill all the precepts and commands which they issue for our peace and benefit.
