Whether by word, by money, or by labor, he does [every] beneficence that lies in his power; and it is such a one that we ought to obtain as a friend, but he is exceedingly hard to find. 4. He must be sincere, [and] intimately point out and caution against his friend’s shortcomings. For the hypocrite and the man-pleaser, through divers flatteries, praises his friend’s every word and deed—even unto his shortcomings—lest he should dismiss him from the table. And albeit he himself knoweth that the things he saith are false, yet what availeth it, since the other believeth [them]? And such friends are exceedingly many, and in many places are they found, who by their true name are called *pataṙak‘ał* (that is, *č‘anax ealayəč‘i* [a bowl-licker/parasite]). And to beware of such as these is truly most difficult.
