The love of learning is such a noble and honorable virtue that it maketh the scholar beloved of all men. For [as for] the learned man, even if he be the child of a common person, yet a nobility appeareth upon him; and if he be the child of a great man, a far brighter luster shineth forth [from him]. Wherefore, in whichever nation learned men have from the beginning flourished the more, they have made both themselves and their nation distinguished and renowned, and [likewise] beloved and respected among other nations. Therefore, it behoveth diligent youths to be pursuers of knowledge and to learn according as their mental capacity hath strength, or as far as their civic condition alloweth, and affordeth time to occupy themselves with study; so that they may have respect like unto a nobleman, and be beloved of all, and by [their] nation-benefiting labor render their Fatherland glorious and of good report.
