CHAPTER II: Diligence.

Industriousness is an exertion whereby man striveth to do that which is necessary and befitting unto his station. [For] man is born unto labor, even as God said unto our Forefather: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread.” Labor hath great benefit and profit for man’s life, his livelihood, and his entire conduct of life, if we employ [it] with prudence and lose it not in vain. a. By labor, man is able to learn the education, the craft, and the knowledge necessary unto him; but whosoever fleeth from labor and loveth idleness, such a one of necessity remaineth coarse and ignorant, and falleth into diverse kinds of misery and want. b.
