[...upon] this world. He deemeth others foolish and disparageth [them]; he taketh counsel with no one, wherefore, oft-times, his enterprise doth not prosper, and he suffereth loss. 4. When the humble [man] seeth that someone hath suddenly fallen into misfortune, he, being compassionate, saith: "Alas for the man! The fortunes of the times have brought [this] upon him." But the proud [man] doth never entertain the thought that [the other] hath met with an adversity; rather, he saith that he knew not what he was doing, [and] acted according to his own [foolish] mind. For the proud [man] approveth only of his own deeds, and despiseth others. [5.] The humble [man] ever acknowledgeth himself to be defective, and striveth to be prudent and virtuous; wherefore, he amendeth his character and conduct from day to day. But the proud [man] seeth his own defects not at all; rather, he deemeth himself to be already perfectly virtuous. Wherefore, his errors become a habit unto him, and as it were a second nature; and he himself ever remaineth raw, perverse, and incorrigible.
