If the humble [man] should perform a deed beneficial to the nation and worthy of honour, he doth not look for the publick to honour him; for he hath so settled it in his mind that it was not by his own skill or diligence that he did that thing, but by the power and [good] success [granted by] God. The proud [man], on the other hand, though he do nothing of benefit to the publick, ever seeketh honour and deference for himself; for he thinketh thus: that all men are beholden to honour him. And if anyone doth not render him honour according to his desire, he scowleth, and turneth friendship into enmity; and it cometh to pass that he even inflicteth harm. 8. But the more the proud [man] desireth to be honoured, so much the farther doth honour flee from him; whereas the more the humble [man] doth not seek honour, so much the more honour doth he find.
