...could remain; in like manner also, this world doth not remain without tribulation and turmoil. For when thou seest [it] peaceful and tranquil, an unthought-of mishap and distress suddenly befalleth, and turneth our repose upside down. Wherefore, if we endure without murmuring, that severe distress is lightened and becometh tolerable; but if we become fretful and murmur, it weigheth heavier upon us and becometh unbearable, and consumeth our heart and soul. 2. In time of distress, we ought to call to mind that this world is mutable, [and] the times do not remain in one fashion; just as prosperity changeth into adversity, even so after adversity followeth prosperity. But if we endure not adversity, [and] through anxious brooding destroy ourselves, when the time changeth [and] turneth unto prosperity, what profit [shall] that [be] unto us, when we have departed from the world? Therefore let us keep our hearts at ease, [and] bring no harm upon our lives, that we may enjoy that [very] prosperity.
