...provideth for his needs without difficulty. But the impatient youth doth not break his [own] will; when he is rebuked or heareth a harsh word, he casteth [his work] aside, walketh away, and remaineth unrefined and unskilled. Therefore, having in his adulthood neither trade nor earnings, he wandereth idle all the day long, and spendeth his life in want and misery. Thus it behoveth us from childhood to exercise patience, that we may learn those things which are needful, and live in quiet ease.

CHAPTER VI: [On] Obedience.

Obedience is a virtue whereby the inferior subjects his own will to the will and command of the superior, whereby he places himself under every order and law. 1. It is necessary for a child to obey [his] parents, tutor, [and] master; to execute the command of his superior, to heed [his] counsel, and not to transgress his word; and thus he shall become pleasing in their sight, [and] a man [of understanding]...
