...learneth, and advanceth from day to day. But if he be self-willed and conceited, heedeth not his superior, [and] doeth [only] that which his own will desireth, he can learn neither civility, nor science, nor art, nor shall he have fitness for any work; but he becometh an idle and useless man. 2. Every man is bound to obey all divine and human laws, and to perform with willingness and love whatsoever they command: and this, not being moved merely by fear of the punishments appointed for the disobedient, so that he may remain free and unpunished, but also on account of the prompting of conscience, which ever urgeth from within that one must obey the laws and the command of a superior. For God hath established this order and ordinance: that the inferior should humble himself before the superior, hearken unto his counsel, and fulfill his commandment. Wherefore, he who is obedient and followeth the divine ordinance not only suffereth not the punishment which the laws threaten against the disobedient, but also dischargeth the duty incumbent upon him.
