And thus it appears the more in an uneducated, tale-bearing child, who, hearing an incomplete matter from someone and not properly understanding it, goes immediately and recounts it crookedly to another. And the listener, being simple-minded, believes what he says, holding as true the vulgar proverb: “Take the word from a child.” And in this manner a disturbance is born between the speaker and the listener; and at times this disturbance grows so strong and becomes so inflamed that several peacemakers, coming together, can hardly remove [it] and establish peace; just as the common proverb says: “A fool threw a stone into a well, and ten wise men could scarcely take it out.” And since such slanderous and troublemaking [behavior] of children arises from a lack of education—which at times becomes the cause of diverse harms and sins—for this reason, children must be educated from youth, learn civility, and not remain coarse and unadmonished, so that in adulthood they may be orderly and peace-loving.
