and does those things which are unbecoming of humanity, whereby he becometh abominable before all. 2. The modest [person] is bashful and respectful; wherefore he fleeth far from all vice and vile deeds, lest he do something unbecoming, and be put to shame before others. But the insolent [person] taketh no heed of himself whatsoever; he chooseth neither that which is worthy nor that which is becoming; he committeth every vice and feeleth no remorse. 3. The modest [person], if he committeth a fault and heareth counsel and reproof from his elder [or superior], however heavy and bitter the reproof may be, he doth not scowl; he receiveth it with a joyful heart and willingly. For he knoweth that it is for his own benefit; and he is thankful, [knowing] that he reproveth him out of love for him; and thereafter he correcteth himself, and remaineth sober and vigilant, lest he fall once again into error.
