[The various parts of] this world are situated far from one another; if they had remained until now with only their customary produce, arts, and native cattle and animals, they would truly lack many sorts of necessary things, as was the case with the land of [A]merica when the Europeans entered there. But because, from time to time, such men have arisen from those countries, who, upon seeing in foreign lands precious produce and animals that were not to be found in their own parts, became zealously inspired, and brought into their own countries the seed or planting of those plants, and some of those animals, and increased them day by day to such an extent, that now, having themselves sufficiently enjoyed their fruit, they send and sell the surplus to foreign lands; and with these [proceeds] they purchase what they lack and find useful; and thus they suffer no want of anything, whether necessary or ornamental. 6.
