...of the bee; for as the bee roams the mountains [and] valleys, alights upon all kinds of flowers, and says not, “this is the flower of a rose, [and] this of a thorn,” [but] gathers from each one the nectar useful to it, brings [it] to the hive, and makes the honey, which even goes as a gift unto kings. In like manner also the zealous man looks upon and observes the laws, knowledge, arts, and other customs of diverse nations and cities; and whatever among them is good, profitable, and useful, these he separates and takes, and makes to flourish among his own nation. And thus does he brighten his Fatherland day by day with every manner of goodness, and renders it renowned. But the envious [man], who is filled with evil malice, sees not the good of another; and should he happen to see [it], he slanders and disparages [it], and praises and magnifies only himself, as though he were perfect in every manner of goodness and had no lack; for the envious [man] is haughty and vainglorious.
