And our Lord saith: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves" (Matt. 7:15). 20. Thus the envious [man] learns pride from the lion, whereby he considers only himself great and worthy of honor, and all other men contemptible and vile. Wherefore the Holy Apostle Paul commands his disciple Timothy, saying: "Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches" (1 Tim. 6:17). Whereupon the great Augustine saith: "Take away pride, and riches will not harm." 21. From the bear, he learns envy, whereby he grieves and sorrows over the success and good reputation of his fellow; and he rejoiceth, as if he had found a treasure, [over his downfall]...
