[He] does not praise the fault of a friend like a man-pleaser, nor does he recount [it] to others and disparage [him] like an enemy; rather, he secretly informeth him, and thus in love correcteth [him]. But if he praise his fault as [if it were] a virtue, or publish [it] abroad to others and slander [him], such a one is not a friend. In like manner also, he is not a true patriot who, if by the circumstance of the times or through neglect a defect hath entered into the nation, concealeth or defendeth it, and suffereth it to remain thus; or slandereth [his people] to foreigners and disparageth his nation, not considering that he himself is of the same nation; [for] by reproaching his nation, he himself becometh reproachful. 7.
