...and the unerring sons of the Holy Mother See, admonished by the words of the blessed Apostle Paul (Heb. 13:17; Tit. 3:8–11)—which it is right and fitting for us also to read and comprehend, and only then boast in the Christian faith—behold, the true sons of our father the Holy Illuminator, and pupils of his holy Successors, are ready to give an answer in accordance with them, should any discourse arise concerning the Council of Chalcedon.
See how beautifully the holy [and] blessed Catholicos Grigor writes, in reply to the inquiry of Manuel, Emperor of the Greeks, with the assent and signature of the blessed bishops of our holy Apostolic Church of Armenia, wherein, after demonstrating the orthodox harmony of the three Holy Ecumenical Councils, he concludes thus:
“There are found among us, and accepted, the canons of other councils as well, which established various orders in the Church and refuted diverse heresies; such as the Council of Ancyra, for the refutation of the impiety of Licinius, who compelled the presbyters unto the sacrifices of idols; [the Council of] Caesarea, against voluptuous women; and [the Council of] Neocaesarea, against indiscriminate fornication; and [the Council of] Gangra, against the heresy of the Eustathians; and [the Council of] Laodicea, against the Quartodecimans; and [the Council of] Sardica, for the needs of ecclesiastical orders. From these orthodox councils and those like unto them, we learned the confession of faith; and from their canons, decency of conduct, the discrimination of sins, and the decorum of ecclesiastical orders. By their guidance and paternal instruction we journey on, taking heed to deviate neither to the right nor to the left from the royal highway which they have shown us.
For this reason, we also boldly anathematize the heretics anathematized by them: Arius, who denied the Son to be of the nature of the Father; Macedonius, because he blasphemed the Holy Spirit; Paul of Samosata, and Nestorius, the renewer of his heresy, who called our God, our Lord Jesus Christ, a mere man, conjoined to God by association and [divine] pleasure, and not by an ineffable and marvelous union. We also anathematize the impious Eutyches, who confessed the union of the Divinity and the Flesh by confusion, and not with the preservation of the property of the natures. We also accept and join in chanting with the holy and divine...
