...of the [holy] Fathers, who strove even unto death in opposing these heresies, and by their divinely-inspired teaching bequeathed to us in writing the orthodox faith; which [writings] we took and received, and by constant reading [thereof] hasten to be found unerrant disciples unto them (*General [Epistle]*, p. 114). Let us mention here the letter of our blessed Catholicos Zakʻaria the First, which he wrote to the Patriarch of Constantinople of the Greeks, Phot [Photius] by name, who was exceedingly vainglorious. He greatly vexed those of our nation who were under the dominion of the Greeks, in order to render himself pleasing before the champions of the Council of Chalcedon; on which account he called our nation, with abusive speech, *Tsandzalikeans* [Jacobites]. Whereupon our aforementioned Catholicos wrote an epistle to him, and after many words, saith: "We (Armenians) are not disciples of Yakovb Tsandzalos [Jacob Baradaeus], from whom the Jacobites are named, nor of Yulianos of Halikarnassos [Julian of Halicarnassus], nor of Petros (the Fuller [Gnapheus]), nor of Ewtikʻēs [Eutyches], but of Saint Grigor the Illuminator," and so forth, as the trustworthy historians Vardan and Kirakos write. Indeed, fair-minded reader, take note of the errors of their absurd writings; let us proceed then to the examination of their other equivocal words.
