...death, and one who died; but He who suffered and died having assumed a human nature, is the very same who [is] impassible and immortal by His own Divine nature. For this reason is it also spoken of as the blood of God, and the sufferings and death, and God crucified; which things we ascribe not to the solitary Divine nature, but to the ineffable union” (*In the Letter to the Emperor Manuel*). And if those slanderers were [true] followers of the Illuminator, and not errant in mind, it had been right and meet for them to follow at least the orthodox doctrine of our holy Father Gregory the Illuminator, who writeth: “For He was united in the flesh by nature, and mingled the flesh with His Godhead. Whosoever have believed in Him shall enjoy the ineffable good things; and whosoever have deviated from this faith have walked [paths] untrodden and pathless, and have fallen into error, and have dug out for themselves patched-up ditches, and have perverted many from the truth of the faith... Only this true faith have we from the Holy Scriptures and from the laws of the Church, [as a] guide upon the way of life unto God, and in the holy writings of the doctrine through this faith. And swerve ye not from the order of wisdom, neither to the right nor to the left” (*In Agathangelos, printed in Polis, pp. 160–164*). In like manner writeth the holy Cyril, Chief-Bishop of Alexandria (*in the Letter unto Secundus*): “[He] separateth the voices which in the Evangelical and Apostolical preaching pertain unto Christ, and saith that there are some which ought to be applied to the man, that is, the human things, and there are [some] which are meet for the Word alone, manifestly the God-befitting things; and because he separateth [them] according to diverse aspects, and setteth down as it were separately a man in part, who was born of the holy Virgin, and likewise separately and in part the Son, who [is] the Word from God the Father; and they say that the holy Virgin is not the *Theotokos* [Mother of God], but rather the mother of a man. But we hold this not to be so, but have thus learned from the Holy Fathers: to confess One Christ, and Son, and Lord; that is, the Word born of God the Father before the ages, God-befittingly and ineffably; and in these last times of the ages the very same born for our sake according to the flesh from the holy Virgin, forasmuch as being God He was born incarnate and become man; wherefore we also name His bearer the *Theotokos*.” Writeth also the holy Athanasius (*in the Discourse on the Incarnation*...)...
