[they] should administer the medicine immediately, until a space of two, or at least one, hour has passed. If it be necessary to place the patient’s feet in warm water, he must be lying down with his feet hanging down into the water; the reason being that it very often happens that the patient grows faint [or: feels oppressed in his chest] while sitting up. 34. It very often happens that from a distant place, people request medicine from a physician by means of a brief letter, yet do not write clearly to the physician all the necessary symptoms for diagnosing the illness, whereby it becomes very difficult to prescribe or dispense medicine to an unseen patient. He who seeks help from a physician from a distant place must write the symptoms of the patient's ailment in this order: What trade [or: profession] does he have? With what sort of symptoms did his illness begin? What is considered to be the cause of his illness? Does he have chills [or: tremors], or not? Is the beating of the pulse strong, or weak? Does he have his strength, or is he feeble? Is he bedridden the entire day, or not? Is the patient’s condition uniform, or does it vary from morning to evening? Is he tranquil, or is he delirious [or: agitated], and at what time? Does he have a constant fever [lit. heat], or does he occasionally feel chills? Does he have pain in the head, the gullet (*boghas*), the chest, the belly, the back, or elsewhere, or not? Is the tongue dry, yellow, or coated with white phlegm (*balgham*), or not? Is he thirsty, or not? Is his mouth bitter, or not? Does he belch [or: hiccup], or not? Is he constipated [lit. bound in the belly], does he have diarrhea [lit. looseness], and of what sort is the stool? Does he pass more urine [lit. water-need], or not, or what color of sediment settles at the bottom? Does sweat break out, or not? Does he cough, or not, or what color is the phlegm; [and] does blood also come with it at times, or not?
