...until they understand whether it is a specific ague, and what the manner of its onset is—whether it comes every day, or every other day [tertian], or every two days [quartan]. The sick person must beware of fat and indigestible foods, as for example: *kat‘n* [dairy/sweet milk], *t‘an* [churned sour milk/buttermilk], *matsun* [yogurt], cheese, milk, *nazuk* [rich pastry], *apukht* [cured/dried meat/pastırma], pork, *zurgiēl* [sturgeon marrow/fish-back dish], *ghosh* [game/fowl], caviar, salmon (*oragul*), hard-boiled or roasted eggs, bad and moldy bread, and other such things.
13. On the contrary, the patient must use easily digestible foods: rice or groats soup cooked with a little butter, or with sweet [olive] oil, or dry [plain]. And of vegetables and garden produce: beet, carrot, sorrel (*aweluk*), spinach, cornelian cherry (*yun*), *ghoghnushak* [mallow/edible wild greens], blackthorn (*mamukh*), currant, and barberry; from these a *spas* [pottage/soup] is to be cooked, putting a little butter into it. Of fruits, one may use pomegranate, orange, *alibukhari* [Bokhara plum], ripe damson (*chanchur*), and lemon; squeeze their juice, add sugar or good honey into it, and drink [it] diluted with water, in moderation. But the patient must eat food four hours before the ague-fit, or four hours after it, and that too in moderation.
14. It very often happens that the chill comes on once or twice and passes away of itself; and very often, by vomiting from the mouth, or purging from the bowels, or breaking out into a sweat of itself, and by other favorable occurrences, [the patient] recovers.
15. When thou beginnest to administer medicine for the ague, first and foremost understand well the condition of the sick person, concerning which thou shalt suffer no difficulty if thou carefully ascertainest the time of the ague’s onset and the other symptoms of the patient. Regard being had to the condition of the patient, the following remedies must be employed:
A. If the patient hath no appetite, is nauseated, retches, or vomits, or his mouth is bitter and he feeleth a turning of the head [dizziness], his tongue being yellow or white, then thou must give an oral emetic medicine, Number 1, or 2, or 3, and make him drink lukewarm water over it, which will dilute the phlegm/choler [*maghas*] gathered within the stomach and easily bring it forth.
