...to mix one tablespoon in a large glass of warm water and to gargle the mouth frequently with it is very beneficial. 56. When the fever diminishes and the other symptoms of the illness no longer trouble [the patient], but the sick person is only very feeble, has no appetite, and when rising from bed his head spins and he feels faint [lit. his heart narrows], his eyes are dim, [and] when he closes his eyes he falls into delirium (talks to himself), then one must give the sick person strengthening medicine:— A. Apply to the calves of the legs [lit. the fish-flesh of the legs] or to the soles of the feet sour dough prepared with mustard (see Number 95) and leave it on until it becomes thoroughly red. If that place of application should blister and fill with water, snip the skin with scissors so that the water may come out; then place over it unsalted butter, or raw milk cream, or plaster (salve) Number 24 smeared upon a cloth, or upon a cabbage or beet leaf, and change it twice a day until it heals. B. During the sick person’s feebleness, one must have [him] drink a spoonful of good wine mixed with water; or weak tea made from cinnamon [and] sage, with sugar or good honey, one or two glasses, and mix in also a little good wine; or have [him] drink the medicine under Number 11, or 12, or 13, or 14. 57. When the sick person gradually recovers, one must feed [him] moderate amounts of light foods: for example, soup with rice or cracked wheat, with a little butter cast into it; soup cooked with pullet or mutton meat; and on fast days, soup cooked with good olive oil. After a few days, considering the condition of the sick person, one may feed [him] little by little well-cooked pullet, chicken, mutton, and also beef; only the sick person must not eat heavy and hard-to-digest foods, that is to say: pork, cured meats [pastirma], fat fowls, *zurgel*, *ghosh*, caviar, salmon, trout, and carp [lit. blue-fish], as well as hard-boiled or fried eggs, pilaf, and other such things, until the strength of the sick person is well restored. 58.
