[... in which they] lie down; likewise, when in the autumn or winter they lie too close to the fire, or suddenly go outside from a warm place without wrapping up, catch a chill, and let their sweat grow cold; or when they do not change their clothes that have been drenched by the rain and lie down in them; or when, after working outside for a long time in exceedingly cold and damp (humid) weather, upon returning home, instead of warming themselves gradually, they immediately sit or lie down near the fire. The sickness arising from these causes is sometimes local (*Localis*) and sometimes general (*universalis*), which spreads [throughout the system].
42. One stricken with this affliction suffers from slight chills, mild aches and bruised sensations, and heaviness throughout the whole body; at night fever sets in, and the front half of the head and the back ache. It also sometimes happens that all parts of the body are in pain, or the ache shifts from one place to another; the nose runs with mucous, the eyes grow red and watery, swallowing becomes difficult, and the chest feels constricted (tight) and heavy. In accordance with each person’s constitution, these symptoms appear severe and heavy in one, and mild in another. The patient senses a bitterness in the mouth, feels a disgust toward food, the tongue is coated with white phlegm or yellow bile, and the skin of the body is dry.
43. The means for curing this sickness are:
A. One must endeavor to dissolve the phlegm (*balgham*) accumulated in the stomach and soften the skin of the body so that perspiration may readily flow; therefore, instead of water, the patient should be given to drink boiled barley-water (see No. 18); best of all is a tea prepared from elderflowers mixed with vinegar and honey (see No. 25). At night, when going to bed, let them rub upon the body—with a piece of cloth or a sponge (*cloud*)—a half-and-half mixture of vinegar and warm water, especially upon the most painful parts.
B. Let them give the patient a purgative medicine, Number 4, or 5, or 6, or 7, or 8, which they should repeat once every three or four days, as long as the patient remains constipated in the bowels.
C. Whenever the patient feels a bitterness [in the mouth], has no appetite, and feels nausea [...]*
