...and drawn in, and a cold sweat breaks out over the whole body. From these signs it is evident that the condition of the patient is bad, and the malady difficult to cure, especially if care has not been taken of the patient from the beginning and medicine has not been administered.
106. This illness comes to light most often in the last days of summer, and chiefly from the following causes: A. When corrupted bile begins to boil within those who perform heavy labor in severe heat and remain for a long time under the sun. B. It occurs to those who do not obtain good and fresh (*t’aza*) food, and make use of spoiled provisions. C. It occurs to those who make use of overly heating and potent (*t’ēzh*) drinks, which are harmful not only in summer, but at all times. D. It is caused by eating excessive fruit, especially unripe fruit, as well as mushrooms (*sōkōn*) and cucumbers (*khiar*), and heavy and indigestible things like these.
107. The method of curing this illness is as follows: If this illness arises from the causes written above—that is to say, from injury or from harmful provisions—then they must frequently administer warm water to drink, or milk mixed with lukewarm water. B. Three times a day they should give a lukewarm clyster [composed] of milk and water mixed; they should feed the patient broth of chicken or pullet meat; if the patient should fall greatly from strength, they should give medicine number 36, and place upon [the area] slightly above the lower abdomen a small [poultice of] dried mint, or bran sprinkled (*srskats*) with vinegar. C. If this illness has arisen from the excessive consumption of fruit, from the beginning they must administer an emetic by mouth, [either] number 1, or 2, or 3; and they should rub warm oil (olive or linseed) upon the belly, and place upon the belly warmed bran, or warmed dry barley. One must beware of constipating [astringent] medicines or other hot and tart remedies applied or rubbed externally—such as nutmeg (*javz*), pomegranate rind boiled in wine, alum (*shib*) dissolved in water, and others similar to these—which are exceedingly harmful to this disease.
