[common] medlar, likewise sour pomegranate and other ripe fruits, [yet] only in moderation. 6. For drink, they must give the patient lemon [water], or sour pomegranate [juice], or verjuice (*agholkh*) water, or merely plain water mixed with vinegar. 129. While employing the remedies written here, it is likewise necessary to keep the patient’s clothes clean, as well as the room wherein he lies, the air of which is to be frequently renewed by opening the windows and doors.

CHAPTER XV. On the Venereal [Disease] (The Gallic Disease, Frenki)

150. Of the diseases that corrupt the human race, none is so severely contagious as this disease; it is for this reason that they call it the *t‘ywnawor hiwandut‘iwn* [poisonous/venereal disease], or *gaghghiakan akht* [the French disease / morbus gallicus]. 151. The French disease is distinguished from other diseases resembling it by its distinct symptoms, which alter gradually, as shall be mentioned below. Other diseases resembling this—both internal and external—arise silently within the body on their own, but the French disease does not come into being in any other manner than by being communicated from one person to another. 152. Through carelessness, this disease is communicated from one to another in the following circumstances: A. At the time of [carnal] intimacy, if one [of the partners] has this malady, it will cling to the other as well. B. If someone has sores of the French disease broken out upon the lips or in the mouth, and approaches [and] kisses another; in this manner, it is communicated exceedingly quickly, especially to children. C. Likewise, it is communicated to children when one sick with the French disease takes a thing they have chewed out of their mouth and gives it to a child.
