...such carelessness can become the cause of harmful diseases. 4. This malady is likewise transmitted from a pipe [chibouk] smoked by a sick person, from [their] spoon, and from [their] dish, as well as from wearing their clothes and lying in [their] bed. How great an indiscretion it is on the part of those who go into a coffeehouse (*ghahvekhana*) or other public places and smoke tobacco (*tutun*) using another’s pipe or hookah [*ghalyan*], passing it from one to another! Through this, it very often happens that these incautious and unacquainted companions contract the French disease [syphilis] from one another. 5. If ulcers of the French disease have broken out upon the breasts of a mother or wet nurse, it will immediately be transmitted to the child; and if such ulcers have broken out upon the lips of the child, it will immediately be transmitted to the one nursing [it]. Therefore, one must choose a wet nurse with great caution. If the child should have this malady, one must administer medicine to [it], and until [it] recovers, feed [it] cow’s or goat’s milk instead of the breast. 155. First, if the French disease manifests outwardly upon the male or female secret parts [genitals], ulcers will then break out, in the place of which there will at first be an itch; then, smarting [and stinging], the ulcers will gradually broaden and deepen, and finally a venomous pus will discharge from them.* 2. From this, the tip of the foreskin of the man’s male member swells up, pulling it down or up becomes difficult, and it afflicts the patient. 3. These ulcers are considered positive signs of the French disease. If this sickness is not completely cured within six weeks by proper medicines, it will then spread throughout the entire body, and curing it thereafter is difficult. 4. If anyone has the above-written signs of the sickness, and out of shame or fear does not immediately disclose [it] to a physician or to an experienced and prudent man, and does not apply proper medicines, in a short time there will appear in the seat [anus/perineum] a tumor like a wart [condyloma]; the glands of the groins will swell...
