When this disease has taken hold very severely, at that time the patient will feel signs of chills [and] intolerable bone pain, which grows more violent especially in the evening hours. 6. Hard swellings will appear upon the bones; purulent ulcers will break out in the mouth and upon the lips, which will make swallowing difficult. The venom of these ulcers is so poisonous that it will consume and waste away the neighboring flesh, as well as the soft tissues to the right and left within the throat (the tonsils) and the uvula. This is the reason that the voice changes and [the patient] speaks with a nasal twang. 7. Sometimes it also causes caries [erosion], especially in the cartilages of the nose, whereby the nose will rot and fall away, and will remain thus forever. If newborn infants be stricken with this disease, they will have white pustules broken out upon the lips or in the mouth, from which venom discharges; or upon the seat [buttocks] they have swellings like warts, or in places [the skin] will crack and venom or watery fluid will begin to flow.
154. If the skin of the male member should swell and pulling it up or down becomes difficult, the male member must be kept for a long time in Medicine No. 51 made lukewarm, and Medicine No. 52 must be applied upon the swelling and changed frequently.
