146. When there are generated in a person’s bowels earthworms,* or [worms] strap-like and long, or small and short like maggots, it is called the worm sickness. 147. The worm is generated either in a round form like an earthworm, the length of which is up to one span; or in a flat form, like a strap, which is up to sixty *gaz* in length and sometimes even more, and which falls away of its own accord; or like those small maggots that are generated in putrid fish or meat. 148. Although the worm in and of itself is not a disease, it only becomes the cause of other notable diseases: that is to say, vertigo, nausea [or anguish of heart], fainting, madness, belly-ache, diarrhea, fever, somnambulism (infirmity), and so forth. 149. The head of one having worms turns frequently, he suddenly starts up from sleep and grinds his teeth, he sleeps with open eyes, his ears ring and buzz, his nose itches frequently, the cheeks flush red and immediately return to their [natural] color; his mouth smells, the appetite is sometimes very open and sometimes closed off, the complexion of the face has a yellowish hue, and drool (*shoghinkʻ* [*pʻolinkʻ*]) flows from his mouth, especially at nights during sleep; in the mornings the heart [faints / is sick]

HEAD: CHAPTER XVII. On the Disease of Worms.

146. When there is generated in a man's bowels an earthworm-like* worm, or [one that is] strap-like and long, or small and short like maggots, it is called the worm disease. 147. The worm is generated either in a round shape like an earthworm, the length of which is up to one span; or in a flat shape, like a strap, which is up to sixty cubits [in length] and sometimes even more, which drops away piece by piece of itself; or like those small maggots which are generated in rotten fish or meat. 148. Although the worm is not a disease in and of itself, it only becomes the cause of other notable diseases; that is to say: dizziness of the head, oppression of the heart [or nausea], fainting, madness, belly-ache, looseness [of the bowels], fever, somnambulism (debility), and the like. 149. He who hath worms suffereth frequent dizziness of the head; he suddenly starteth up from sleep and grindeth his teeth; he sleepeth with open eyes; his ears ring and buzz; his nose itcheth very often; his cheeks flush red and immediately return to their [natural] color; his breath stinketh; his appetite is sometimes exceedingly open and sometimes bound up; he hath a yellowish complexion, and spittle (drool) floweth from his mouth, especially at night while asleep; in the mornings his heart [or stomach]...

NOTE: * *Erkramayr* [earth-mother] is the name given to that red worm, a span in length, which breeds in damp places, and which they put on a hook and [use to] catch fish.
