Seat [the patient] up to the waist in warm water, and leave [her] as long as she can bear it, or until a sweat breaks out. 2. Three or four times a day, give [her] to drink chamomile, or morning flower [calendula/chicory?], brewed like tea. 3. If there be costiveness in the belly, give a purging medicine, Number 4, or 5, or 6, or 7. 4. She must eat light and easily digestible foods. 5. She must not go out into the damp and cold air; let her do only light labor in the house. 6. If she feels a severe headache, such that her forehead feels as though it were bursting open, at that time blood must be let from the arm. If she feels a heaviness of the chest, or intolerable pain in the belly and the back, let blood from the foot. To let blood from such patients, or to give them those medicines that are prescribed for bringing on the monthly courses, is very harmful. To patients of this sort one must first give a light medicine that cleanses and strengthens the stomach, Number 6 or 7, and thereafter Number 64. If the patient be of a frail (feeble) and powerless constitution, it is most beneficial [to give] the whey of curdled milk (see Number 42), into which they must quench (scorch) red-hot iron (by dropping it inside), and give [it] to drink, three or four glasses a day, preparing it afresh every day.
159. During the time of taking medicine, the patient must occupy herself in the house with light tasks, or, when the weather is fine, go outdoors—
