...[there] appear red lines, extending up to the navel. If these lines begin to blacken, it is a sign that the parturient woman’s condition is dangerous; in this state, her whole body becomes languid, her countenance altered; she is seized with delirium, she vomits, and sweats severely; from the womb there flows a fetid and scalding water, and she is repeatedly purged, with watery and loose stools.
194. The manner of curing this dreadful disease is thus:
A. Let a moderate [quantity of] blood from the arm.
B. Give an enema [*grekh*] two or three times a day (see Number 20).
C. Wash the womb, by injecting moderately warm water with a syringe [*shapabun*] (a small clyster-pipe).
D. Apply warm upon the belly the medicine indicated in Number 70, and frequently make [her] drink one or other of the remedies mentioned in Numbers 17, 18, and 19.
195. Besides the inflammatory fever mentioned above, the forcible extraction of the afterbirth [*erekhi enkelə*] also sometimes causeth a severe hemorrhage from the womb. If this kind of hemorrhage should increase to such a degree that the strength of the whole body faileth, and therewith the head grows dizzy and she fainteth: at that time one must dip pieces of cloth in water mixed with vinegar, wring them out gently, and place them upon the belly, the loins, and the thighs, changing them frequently that they may not dry up; let them proceed in this manner until the hemorrhage is stayed.
196. It is equally harmful if that blood which floweth from the parturient woman's womb for several days after delivery should suddenly be checked; from this also diverse dangerous maladies will arise, namely: fever, gripings [*khet’k’*] of the breast, and the like. The causes of the cessation of this blood may be: sudden fright, anger, sorrow, fear, and such violent passions of the soul; likewise, the tight binding of the belly with an apron [*gokt*] or other thing; and also catching cold, which generally befalleth village women, who, after delivery, before they are yet perfectly restored in strength, engage in heavy labors and sometimes walk about upon the cold and damp ground.
