239. The manner of using charcoal as an internal remedy is thus: 1. If the mouth has a foul odor, or upon belching, a rotten or sour taste comes into the mouth. 2. If one has gripes caused by flatulence or worms. 3. If there is vomiting or purging, or if one has diarrhea accompanied by flatulence. 4. If one has chills, or *subavand*. 5. If a pregnant woman suffers from vomiting or purging. 6. If a pregnant woman senses signs of a miscarriage. 7. If children suffer from diarrhea. 8. If [a child] spits up or belches. 9. If one is restless and perturbed during sleep. In all these aforementioned occurrences, it is beneficial to administer charcoal as a remedy in the following manner: Take charcoal (of whatever kind of wood [you] please) well-glowing, so that it has no bluish flame; blow upon it well, that the ash may be cleared away; after pounding it fine, pass it through a sieve, and use it thus: When [any] of the aforementioned ailments occur, give to adults twice a day one tablespoonful each time, mixed in water; and to children, according to their age, half or one teaspoonful. In a clyster [also], charcoal powder is to be mixed: for an adult, one or two tablespoonfuls, and for a child, one or two teaspoonfuls.

Take two *mskhal*s of finely pounded charcoal, pour over it two small glasses of water, bring it once to a boil, cool [it], and then cause all of it to be drunk together; if after drinking, [the patient] again feels the signs of having been poisoned, give [it] to drink a second time. If it can be procured, it is well that distilled water of mint or of orange [blossom] also be mixed with the aforementioned remedy. In the time of such a calamity, the charcoal of walnut or of oak wood is of greater benefit. Doctor Berand first devised and tested this remedy against deadly poison, which was also accepted in all the medical assemblies of the Europeans; whereby he also left an immortal memory. In the time of such misfortune, [it] must quickly be put into effect
