...at daybreak, you must know that the fresh wound has turned into a putrid wound, concerning which detailed instructions are written below.
11. If, when you have applied medicine to the wound, the pain increases and causes distress, in order to lessen the pain, place upon it groats or pearl barley boiled in milk and wrapped in a fine cloth, or well-boiled *stepghin* (carrot). If a blue or red swelling appears near the edges of the wound, which occurs more often in crushed or bruised [injuries], at that time, mix vinegar and *ōghi* [spirits] half-and-half, soak a three-fold linen [cloth] therein, place it upon it, and as often as it dries, change it again, until the swelling subsides. It is even better in this circumstance to use lead water (*archchi jur*) in the same manner (see Number 102).

A fresh wound, as stated above, sometimes becomes a putrid wound, especially if the wounded persons have chronic ailments, or diseases that corrupt the blood, or have had a disease corrupting the blood and were not cured. 14. By the continuous discharge of foul-smelling and thin pus, not only will the wound gradually enlarge, but its edges will also become red, the wound will ache, produce fever, and sometimes weakness will come upon the patient; he will grow emaciated and feeble. 15. A putrid wound will not heal with plaster alone, until the internal harmful corruption is cleansed with suitable medicines; therefore, instead of water, one must use for a few weeks the decoction (*dekokht*) Number 84 or 57, and apply upon the wound a plaster on shredded linen, Number 83. If, by using the above-mentioned medicines, wild flesh (excess [flesh]) [grows] in the wound...
