At this time, one must not use plaster; only once a day must they apply burnt alum onto the proud flesh (see number 85), and from above they must place soft, shredded linen and bandage [it]. 16. If all around the wound it begins to redden, give off heat, ache, throb, and itch, at that time the pus will begin to decrease; therefore, one must strive to diminish the pain and increase the pus in the following manner: when bandaging the wound, they must place emollient remedies over it, as for example: boiled carrot (*stepghin* [*gazar*]), or turnip, or barley flour, or the crumb of bread, boiled with milk. If it should happen that excessive pus discharges from the wound, at that time, in order to diminish the pus, you must soak a cloth folded fourfold in vinegar mixed with spirits, or in lead-water, and place it upon the wound, as is set down in number 86, and bandage [it] in that manner. If the wound is not deep when healing [lit. *going home*], at that time it is very good to mix a little vinegar into the pressed juice of plantain [*jghakhot*] and wash the wound with it. 17. If one attends with compassion and close care to a putrid wound formed externally upon the body, it will without fail improve with these prescribed medicines; but if the wound is opened very deep and has reached the bone, especially if it has turned into gangrene [*kertsʻaw*], at that time it will not heal with these medicines; wherefore, it will be necessary without fail to summon a physician.

CHAPTER III. On a Contusion [or Fracture]:

18. When, from being beaten, or struck, or colliding with something, or a heavy object falling upon [it], or from other such accidents, a part of the body is bruised, and that spot turns red, grows livid, and swells up, it is called a contusion [or bruise].
