32. It is called a burn when the skin of the body reddens and blisters upon coming into contact with a heated, boiling, or glowing-hot object, as for example: water, olive oil, clarified butter, iron, and the like. 33. A burn is divided into three degrees: A. When the swelling of the burned place has a slight redness and smarts mildly. B. When the swelling has reddened severely and blistered, and has intense heat. C. When, from being burned, the flesh becomes entirely numb, or the meat blackens and in that place the flesh completely dies and feels nothing at all. 34. In all three of these occurrences, distinct remedies are employed to heal the burn, suited to the symptoms of each. Upon a burn of the first degree one must apply linen steeped in cold water mixed with vinegar, or in lead-water (see number 54), or steeped in *matsun* [yogurt], or in *tan* [buttermilk], or in strained curdled (*p’sorats*) milk; or else apply sour bread dough. In the second degree, one must smear upon the burned place three times a day fresh (*t’aza*) and cold olive oil or linseed oil; or fresh milk cream, or unsalted (*alani*) butter, or the plaster under number 89. In the third degree, in order to restore sensation, one must smear upon the burned place twice a day white naphtha [petroleum], or the remedy under number 90, or good pitch. If the burned place
