CHAPTER IX. On [one] drowned in water.

40. After carefully pulling the drowned person out of the water, they must not be placed upon an inflated wineskin or a carpet and shaken, nor must they be beaten upon the feet, which is exceedingly harmful; but rather, they should quickly be carried to a nearby house, taking care that the head does not hang down or shake about. They should be laid gently into a warm bed, stripped completely naked, and their entire body dried with a warm, dry cloth. 41. Even if the drowned person has remained in the water for a long time, nevertheless, without despairing, the following means should be employed to bring him back: A. He must be laid upon his right side, with the head elevated and the face unobstructed. The dirt collected in the mouth, nose, and ears should be cleansed with the tip of a hen’s feather dipped in oil. B. All around him should be arranged bottles filled with hot water, or ox-bladders, or bags filled with hot ashes or hot bran, and these should be changed frequently so that they do not cool; and the body should be rubbed with warm spirit of camphor (*spirt*), or with a piece of woolen cloth dipped in vinegar or hot water; or he should be wrapped for a quarter of an hour in the freshly flayed hide of an ox or sheep. In a word, they must endeavor by every means to warm him. C. They should sprinkle [liquid] upon the carotid arteries of the neck and rub behind the ears vinegar mixed with *aragh* [spirits], or vinegar alone. They should frequently cause him to smell spirit of sal ammoniac, hold it before his nose, and drop into his mouth *Lokman*’s spirit, numbered 101. D. They should administer an enema of lukewarm *aragh* mixed half-and-half with water, or vinegar and water, or as is written in number 20 or 21. E. When they see that the heart is beating, they must frequently rub over the belly, feet, arms, back, the pit of the stomach, and the flanks a piece of warm woolen cloth, taking care that he does not take a chill; likewise, rub him with hog’s bristles (*jagar*) or strike [him] with nettles, so that the stagnant blood may warm up and begin to circulate through the veins.
