76. If the eye becomes somewhat or exceedingly red, the eyelids swell and hurt, and tears begin to flow continuously, it is called inflammatory eye-disease (ophthalmia). 77. The person stricken with eye-disease, from the beginning until recovery, feels heat, itching, pain, and heaviness in the eyes, such that he thinks something has fallen into his eye; sometimes, along with the eye-disease, headache and chills also occur. 78. This kind of inflammation of the eye happens sometimes from internal and sometimes from external causes. The external causes are the dryness of the air resulting from the continuous heat of summer, smoke, the smell [fumes] of lime, dust (*t’oz*), and something falling into the eye. The internal causes are a plethora of blood [plethora sanguinea], impurity of the intestines and stomach, the drawing of harmful internal bile and impurities toward the eyes, and even more so the diseases of scabies, smallpox, scurvy (*suravand*), and the Gallic disease [syphilis], and other such occurrences. 79. To cure an eye-disease arisen from external causes, care must first be taken to keep the patient far from all those causes that intensify the eye-disease; then a clean piece of linen cloth should be soaked in cold water, or in the medicine [listed under] Number 98, and placed on the eyes
