...come to light: signs of shivering, continuous fever, headache, redness of the face, and a particular tightness of the heart. The pulse of the arm beats weak and frequent at first, and when the pain is prolonged, it beats firm and full. It also often happens that pus gathers in the ear, opens of its own accord, and comes out, and thereby the pain either ceases entirely or diminishes.
84. Earache arises from catching a cold—when one stands bareheaded before a cold wind, or, when the head is sweating in the cold, one takes off one's cap, or chills the head after bathing in warm water; likewise from a heavy blow striking the head, or from an excessive plethory [of blood], or from an insect having entered the ear.
85. One must treat the earache as follows: Give a purgative medicine, Number 4, or 5, or 6. Every night, place the feet in warm water, and have [the patient] drink medicine, Number 17, and place upon the ear the lukewarm medicine of Number 34, boiled in milk. Likewise, it is of great benefit to boil chamomile in milk, pour it while piping hot into a narrow-mouthed vessel, and place its mouth to the ear, so that the vapor (*bugh*) may enter the ear. This remedy is to be repeated four or five times a day.
The following remedy is a powerful medicine for earache: Take one *mskhal* of bitter almond oil, scrape into it a pea-sized amount of camphor, warm it slightly, and drop two drops into the ear three times a day. Camphor oil alone is also quite helpful when used in this manner.
86. If none of the above-mentioned medicines helps and the pain remains in one and the same state, then take half a teaspoon of medicine Number 103, warm it slightly, and pour it into the ear; place a piece of carded cotton inside, [and] it will immediately pass away, which has been proven many times. At the time of using this, you must apply to the nape [of the neck] mustard kneaded with leavened bread dough, as is written under Number 95.
87. If an insect has entered into the ear, then no medicine will be of use; one must only endeavor to [bring it] out...
