...the medicine [number ...], and until the swelling subsides, to cool the fever, administer the medicine numbered 48. If the patient be of a full-blooded [plethoric] constitution and the swelling hath broken out upon the face, then apply fifteen leeches between the two shoulder blades, or take a moderate amount of blood from the arm. If the patient beginneth to be in great distress and to lose his senses, then he must be made to drink the medicine, my Number 1, once every quarter of an hour, two spoonfuls at a time, until he vomiteth well; and further, take care that nothing watery or wet toucheth the swelling. Keep [him] abstinent from all kinds of spirits and stimulating (heating) foods; thou mayest only feed [him] chicken or pullet cooked with rice or with groats [hulled wheat].
