Take as much eel as thou desirest, cast [it] into brine that it may die. Take [it] out, score it on all sides with a sharp knife, [and] hang [it] in the sun. Place a vessel beneath it, so that the fat may drip into it. Gather this fat, pour [it] into a vessel, [and] use [it] when needful, as hath been said. But it will be far better if, upon taking [it] out of the brine, thou hangest [it] for one day, that it may dry a little, and afterwards score [it], [placing it] in the sun or in a warm *t'ondir*, place a vessel with water beneath [it], and also place another small empty vessel floating upon the water, so that the fat may drip into the vessel.

Number 104:

Take chalk, eight *mskhal*s; grated camphor, half a *mskhal*; mix [them] well together; sprinkle [the powder] once an hour upon the swelling of the red wind [erysipelas]. Chalk alone may also be used.

Number 108.

Take half a *mskhal* of cinchona salt, two *mskhal*s of sugar; mix [them] together and pulverize. Divide [it] into fifteen parts; at the time free from chills and fever (the cool time), every two hours dissolve one dose in a little water and give [it] to drink.

...cast it away, [and] gently strain what you have strained once again. Behold, this is the lead vinegar. If you wish to make lead water, take half a *grvankay* [pound] of plain water and one *msxal* of lead vinegar, [and] mix [them] together; it will become lead water.

The manner of preparing coffee (*ghahvé*) from seeds and roots is this: take carrot, chicory root, and barley—whichever of these you wish—dry [it], chop [it] fine, roast [it], pound [it] well, brew [it] like coffee, and use [it]. If you wish, mix [it] half-and-half with coffee, or in place of coffee use roasted acorns [or beech nuts] and the fruit of the valonia oak. The use of these is a specific remedy for dropsy.
