I took the jug, I went up the mountain, I found not my slender-stemmed [sweetheart]. Give me my slender-stemmed sweetheart, That I may not suffer [this] sigh and lament. May I die for the breeze of the great mountain! May I die for the stature of the fair lad! It is a year [now] that I have not seen [him],— May I die for the eye of him who beholds [him]! The nightingale is upon the hill, The apple is upon the tree. Would that they gave the beloved to the beloved, [Even] upon the dry ground—upon a stone!

I took the pitcher [and] went up the mountain, I did not find [my] slender beloved. Give me [my] slender beloved, Lest I suffer sighing and weeping. Let me die for the cool breeze of the great mountain; Let me die for the stature of the fair-haired boy. It is a year [since] I have not seen [him],— Let me die for the eye of the one who sees [him]. The nightingale is upon the hill, The apple is upon the tree. Would that they gave the loved one to the loved one, [Even] on the dry ground, upon a stone.
