He said: “Take the price of your shoes, Turn back, go back upon your tracks, Lay not a hand on the Cross of Karos. That does not befit the Kurdish Baron, That befits the Armenian nation.” I shall be a servant to the Cross of Karos! Mahmad [and] Ali did not come to their senses. They went, stood at the door of the temple, To the temple door they tied the horse; With force they struck the door of the temple, They went, entered into the temple, Went up, stood upon the stone of the altar-dais, Stretched out a hand to the Cross of Karos. I shall be a servant to the Cross of Karos! Ali went mad, his horse went mad, He turned, devoured his horse’s thigh. Mahmad went mad, his horse went mad, His teeth caught the skin of [his own] arm, Just as the horse bites its barley. They filled [them] into the coarse sack of a sieve, [And] sent [them] to the Kurdish Baron.
