[He] being Himself the Lamb, offering [Himself as] the Lamb of God. In place of the unleavened bread, He gave His heavenly Body—born of the Virgin without seed, incorruptible and spiritual. In place of the blood of the sheep of the covenant, He gave us His Blood as a renewed covenant; and in place of the bitter reed, the divine sweetness. The King of creation gave the Bread of Life to the hungry, and the cup of gladness to those who were sorrowful on account of Adam: “This is the new covenant of My Blood in place of the blood of the old covenant, which you shall do in remembrance of Me until I come again.” We who are assembled together beseech You, [united] with the assembled Eleven: You who distributed Your life-giving Body and gave [it] with the cup, grant also to us, Lord, with them, to be partakers of Your table—of the Bread of Life for which we long, and of the drink for which we thirst.
