...the bitterness of the venomous [enemy] which they cast into the parts of my soul: drive [it] far away along with him, and may Your love become sweet within it. Instead of the branch of the death-bearing tree which grew in the midst of Paradise, You bore the wood of the Cross [and] carried [it] up to the place of Golgotha. Lift up my soul, fallen into sins and bearing a most heavy burden, upon Your unfailing hope, [and] lead [it] up to the heavens, to the promised place. On Friday at the third hour, You were nailed to the Cross, O Lord; You loosed the bonds of the first-created [Adam] and bound the enemy. Fortify me beneath the shadow of Your life-giving sign, and at its dawning from the east, enlighten [me] with its light. To the blessed thief You opened the door of the Eden of Paradise; according to the faith of his heart, You fulfilled what was requested. Grant also to me, O Lord, together with him, to hear the same answer: “Today you shall be with Me in Eden, in your first homeland.”
